Alpha lipoic acid is a vitamin-like substance that acts as a coenzyme for carbohydrate metabolism in the citric acid cycle. It is also an antioxidant that is referred to as the universal antioxidant because it is both water and fat soluble, enabling it to function in both the water and fat soluble parts of cells. It also helps to “recycle” other antioxidants in the body.* It also is thought to help removal of heavy metals from the body.* The DEKAN (Deutsche Kardiale Autonome Neuropathie) study followed people with diabetes who had symptoms caused by nerve damage affecting the heart. Treatment with alpha lipoic acid showed statistically significant improvement compared to placebo and caused no significant side effects.71
