Vegetarian diets are gaining popularity due to the widespread negative views on eating meat and animal products. Although there’s a lot of talk about the use of antibiotics and hormones to raise animals, organic, locally farmed animal meat is a very rich source of protein, one of three macronutrients essential for life. Meat is also readily available everywhere, so normal, balanced consumption of animal protein is a great way to keep the body healthy. However, when on a vegetarian diet, many individuals are missing out on the crucial, necessary nutrients for proper health, including certain amino acids and B vitamins. If these missing nutrients are not accounted for, a vegetarian diet may cause detrimental effects on the human body and can lead to other health issues down the road. It is often found that vegetarian diets frequently contain excessive amounts of refined carbohydrates that strip away beneficial fiber, which further deplete vitamins and minerals and even feed yeast organisms. Vegetarian diets can be a very healthy way to eat, however, it may just take a little bit more work to get all the nutrients needed. Therefore, it’s important to make sure that these are included in a vegetarian diet, whether it’s from food sources or supplementation:

  • Calcium and Vitamin D
  • Vitamin B-12
  • Omega-3 Fatty Acids
  • Iron
  • Zinc
  • Iodine
