Anxiety is defined as a feeling of uneasiness, worry, or nervousness, typically about an impending or uncertain outcome. Often anxiety is normal, and part of your body’s natural response to stress. However, there is a difference between everyday anxiety that we all experience from time to time, and an anxiety disorder, which is constant uncorroborated worrying that leads to compelling distress and can disrupt daily life. Nervousness before a stage performance, business presentation, or an uncomfortable event is realistic and considered normal everyday anxiety. On the other hand, extreme avoidance of social situations, irrational fears of situations that pose no threat or danger, and out-of-the-blue panic attacks are often described as hallmarks of a more serious neurological condition. Anxiety disorders are considered the most common psychiatric conditions affecting both children and adults. Although these disorders are highly treatable, only about one-third of the population that is suffering from an anxiety disorder actually receives appropriate treatment.

Genetics, life experiences, and brain chemistry are three of the main causes of these disorders. Anxiety can have physical implications such as high blood pressure, increased heart rate, sweating, chest pains, muscle tension, pain attacks, and shortness of breath.
