Which nutritional supplements – if any – are right for you?
Supplements can be money wasted or money well spent, it all depends on which you are taking and why.
These days, two in three American adults take supplements regularly, which is good until you realize that some may be taking them based on potentially misleading – and perhaps even false – information or from a recommendation of an individual not knowledgeable about nutrition and health. In researching this article, here’s what I found …
Google the words “nutritional supplements” and you get over 10 million results instantly. Google any single vitamin, mineral, herbal, essential fatty acid or phytonutrient and you will find thousands, tens of thousands or even millions of pages of information --

– literally, a mountain of facts, opinions and data that would overwhelm anybody.
You’ll find more facts, opinions and data about supplements in articles published in your local newspapers.
Hundreds of magazines and Internet sites provide information on health and wellness and many include information on nutritional supplements. Some, like www.customvite.com, focus exclusively on supplements while others – the respected publication
Prevention
, for instance – are more general in nature.
Late-night infomercials make claims about their supplement products, just as mainstream advertisers do.
Some of the biggest-selling supplement brands are based on multi-level marketing schemes where the seller’s desire for profit may exceed his concern for your well-being.
If you are thinking about adding supplements to your diet, there is no shortage of information available. The real question is,
Where do you begin
to learn which nutritional supplements
you REALLY need?
The simple answer – start by understanding how your lifestyle is affecting your nutritional needs.
Other than your current medical circumstances, your LIFESTYLE appears to be the most significant predictor of your actual nutritional supplement needs. Consider …
Americans spend HUGE amounts of money in restaurants. The Economic Research Service of the U.S. Department of Agriculture recently reported that, in 2004, urban American households spent between 30 and 44 percent of their total food budget out-of-home … an average of $860 for every man, woman and child in the country’s urban centers.
Much of a household’s purchases at the supermarket are for processed foods… The same study reveals that Americans spent $44.78 each on “cakes, cupcakes, cookies, doughnuts and sweet rolls” in 2004 … $94.41 on prepared foods (primarily frozen) … $42.78 on potato chips and nuts … and just nine cents on vitamin supplements.
Even if you really try to eat healthy foods, today, these foods are less nutritious than they were 50 years ago according to Brian Halweil of the Worldwatch Institute. His report entitled “
Still No Free Lunch
”, which is published by The Organic Center, notes that in the interest of higher crop yields, the nutritional value of fruits, vegetables and grains have declined.
The report states: “As a consequence (of higher yields), the same-size serving of sweet corn or potatoes, or a slice of whole wheat bread, delivers less iron, zinc and calcium. Fewer nutrients per serving translate into less nutrition per calorie consumed. This erosion in the biological value of food impacts consumers in much the same way as monetary inflation; that is, we have more food, but it’s worth less in terms of nutritional value.”
Americans are overfed but undernourished!
Still No Free Lunch describes this fact as a “uniquely modern paradox”. We are eating out more often, eating more processed foods at home, and not enjoying all the nutritional value we expect from fresh fruits and vegetables. (As a nation, our consumption of fresh fruits and vegetables is still far too low. If this paper causes you to do just one thing – increase your consumption of fresh fruits and vegetables.)
The poor diet of many Americans is seen as a significant factor in the rise in overweight and obese Americans, the increase in Type II Diabetes and a host of other diseases.
According to the American Diabetes Association, approximately 64 percent of Americans are overweight or obese. One in three Americans has diabetes – predominantly Type II which is generally related to poor diet and a lack of exercise. The tragedy of Type II Diabetes is that the disease is largely preventable – and easily reversed – through lifestyle choices.
But, “lifestyle” is not a collective; it is as individual as you are. That’s why CustomVite assess individual lifestyles and makes recommendations on the nutritional supplements that are appropriate for you. We call our recommendations your “NutriScript”.
No two individuals are precisely the same, and no two NutriScripts are the same either. But, each and every NutriScript is based on proven science and the role that vitamins, minerals, herbals and other nutrients perform.
All you do is answer a few questions about your lifestyle and health habits. Together with our team of nutritionists, we formulate a vitamin and mineral supplement designed specifically for you.
Your body knows what’s right!
If your healthcare provider agrees with our recommendations, we will prepare your NutriScript – each quality ingredient is carefully weighed and compounded at a Federally-registered and regulated facility into easy-to-swallow capsules and then packaged in daily pouches that slip into pocket or purse.
You will receive a 90-day supply and enjoy the choice of a money-saving single payment or convenient monthly payments. Whichever payment option you choose, your cost will be less than buying retail packages of the same supplements. What is more, there are no bottles to store, dosages to worry about or reminders needed when you are about to run out of a supplement. CustomVite offers an e-mail reorder reminder service.
Your complete satisfaction is fully guaranteed. If you have questions, simply speak to one of our experienced Nutritionists by telephone – the call is free and there is no additional charge for the consultation. If a change in your NutriScript is indicated, you can exchange your current supplements for just the price difference.
